As an event photographer, every so often, a job comes along that just fits - that was the case when I was asked to shoot the 10th annual Medway Open Studios.

I’m fascinated by workplaces and how we make them our own. Whether we work at a desk, on a workbench, in a shed at the end of the garden or in a huge corporate office, we can’t help but personalise them. More of us are working from home; however, most of us still work in a building owned by someone, but those few precious square feet, become ours!

The epitome of this need to personalise has to be the artist. Often, the studio becomes the extension of their art or even a work of art in its own right.

I once stood with artist Naomi Freers looking at a mark on the wall of her studio in St Ives. The space had once been used by Francis Bacon, and Naomi was convinced that Bacon had made the mark.

When you see photographs of Bacon’s London studio, it’s hard to believe he left the walls untouched. At that moment, we were both transported back to 1959. Were we standing in Bacon’s footprints?
