Gravesend’s Lost Pubs: The Old Sun

The Old Sun, Rosherville, Gravesend

Crete Hall Road, Rosherville, Gravesend

Another in my series documenting Gravesend pubs that have recently closed. I’ve generally been trying to photograph the pubs at night, that seems the time when a pub should look most alive, highlighting those that are no longer. But a found myself walking past The Old Sun camera in hand, and it seemed too good an opportunity to miss. I might still come back one evening.

A pub called The Old Sun has been on this site since before 1840 when records first begin. The original building was replaced by this one in 1905. I haven’t been able to find a date when it closed, if you know, please pop it in the comments below.

This is one of many pubs to have recently closed in Gravesend. Since the turn of the century, 24 pubs in the town have ceased trading.
