Lost Pubs: The Globe

Creams, ice cream parlour formally The Globe pub, Gravesend

The Globe, Milton Road, Gravesend

On Thursday last, four well-dressed men arrived at the Globe Tavern, Gravesend, by a London Steam Packet. At their request they were accommodated with a bedroom and a sumptuous dinner, for which they paid and left for London the same afternoon. After they were gone, Mr. Lott, the proprietor, discovered that his bedroom had been broken into, and the bureau plundered of a pocket book containing £160.

The Maidstone Gazette and East Kent Courier, 12 October, 1830.

The Globe was established at the time of the earliest records in 1778 and survived until around 2003, when it became a bathroom equipment showroom. It is now Creams an ice cream and dessert parlour. The second former pub in the town to become one.

This is one of many pubs to have recently closed in Gravesend. Since the turn of the century, 24 pubs in the town have ceased trading.

Part of an ongoing project.

Mr. Lott (Matthew), the proprietor in the story, was my 4th great grandfather. The newspapers assumed the robber men were part of the "Swell Mob". I am writing a book about Matthew Lott’s line. Much of the story centers around "The Globe Years". I am looking for ANY information about when Matthew Lott acquired the lease to the Globe Public House (Inn/Tavern). I know it was after 1818 and before 1823. He is listed twice in 1824 Pigots as the licensed Victualler of the The Globe, and also as a Bricklayer. His bricklaying business partner was Thomas Carley. Matthew was married to Mary (Fielder) Lott and they had 12 children between 1792 and 1818. When Matthew died in 1838, his wife Mary took over until her death in 1850. At that time their grandson, Henry Victor Lott, took over the Inn until he got tired of getting in trouble for hosting after hour card games. So he left the pub business and became a tobacconist in 1867. I have always wanted to visit the building. Thank you for the beautiful photos.

Hi Lisa, it’s really interesting to hear from you. I was enchanted by the story when I read about it. I’m afraid I only know what I read online. If you haven’t done so, I’d speak to the Gravesend Historical Society: https://www.ghs.org.uk/.Good luck with your research!

I will give them a try. I have viewed website many times throughout my research. I long to visit the building where they lived, worked, raised their children and grandchildren, and of course, died. I appreciate what you are doing. It seems things have become more dire for our lost pubs due to the pandemic. Thanks again, and Be Well!
