'We are Gravesend' is a personal photography project exploring the diversity in my local community, Gravesend, Kent, and how residents feel about it. My aim is to photograph and carry out an audio interview with at least one person from every nationality represented in the town. During the 2011 census 40 different nationalities were recorded in Gravesham. I don't know how many there are now, but it be fascinating finding out.
I'd like to compare the impressions of people who have newly arrived with those who have lived in Gravesend all their lives. So if you've moved to Gravesend from overseas or you've lived here all your life I'd love to hear from you.
What will it involve? I'd really like to photograph you at home to see how your home reflects the country of your birth, or maybe it doesn't at all. We'd spend some time understanding what you feel about Gravesend, something about the country of your birth, your hopes and your dreams. I'd like to make a recording of our conversation, a short edited version of which would go with your photograph on the website.
How long will it take? That depends on how good a talker you are maybe 1 hour, or 1.5 hours at most.
What will you do with the photographs? If I get enough participants I'd like to set up a website for the project. Beyond that at this stage I don't know. I will ask you to sign a model release which is a simple document saying I can use your image.
Can I get a copy of my photograph? I'm happy to email you copies of any photographs I take with you.
Will I get paid? This is a personal project, I'm afraid I don't have a budget to pay anyone.
I'm interested! Please contact me, tell me a little bit about yourself and we can arrange to meet up.
