Working with animals by Nigel Rumsey

A woman and her dog in a shop in Shoreditch, London I'd never really considered whether the adage about 'Never working with children and animals' was true. Until I approached this lady who was taking it easy in a very 'Shoreditch' clothes shop / coffee shop and asked if I could take her portrait with her dog.

She was charming and agreed straight away. No matter how much I tried the get the bloody dog's attention he was having none of it. He almost has the 'I know you're there but I'm ignoring you' look on his face - I guess I'm lucky she didn't have kids with her!

New York City photo book by Nigel Rumsey

I'm very pleased with the results my first self-published photo book, shot on the not so mean streets of New York City. I don't mean that to sound immodest but, not having designed and published a photo book before, it's something of a voyage into the unknown. This is one my favourite shots taken in the fabulous New York City library building on Bryant Square. NYC Public Library

If you know New York and you've not looked around the library it's certainly worth a visit. This shot is taken in the Periodicals Reading Room (I think it was called) on the ground floor, left of the entrance. You can see a full preview of the book here.

Library light by Nigel Rumsey

To grab little respite from the crazy wonderful madness that is New York City we slipped into the Public Library building on Bryant Park, not realising it would be one of the most amazing places to shoot. It was about 10am in late March so the sun was fairly low in the sky allowing the sunlight to stream in through the tall windows. NYC Public Library

The building has a number of reading rooms, this one for periodicals was wood panelled with wonderful long tables, the combination of the very dark wood and the bright sunlight was sensational. It was very quiet with no one talking in anything louder than a whisper so I felt I couldn't spend too long clicking away but I did manage to grab a few shots.

The second shot below was taken in the corridor just outside the reading room. This woman was just standing watching passersby on the street giving me plenty of time to shoot.

If I get the opportunity to go back to New York, I'll certainly be heading back to the library hoping the light will be as inspiring as it was on this day.

Chrome by Nigel Rumsey

Chrome I've been something of a fan of Chrome messenger bags for some time, I was in their New York store recently and had the opportunity to take some portraits of Brianna making one of their in-house custom bags. The custom bags give you the opportunity to specify the colour of each of the panels, the buckles, even the colour of the tape. It was quite dark in the store but that combined with the lamp Brianna was using gave a dramatic look I'm really pleased with. I haven't picked up  a custom Chrome bag yet myself but as they're going to be opening a store in London soon the temptation might be too much to resist.
